Oh Sorry, that was the chili I had for dinner last night!
Many evil things there are that your strong walls and bright swords do not stay.
You know little of the lands beyond your bounds.
Peace and freedom, do you say?
The North would have known them little but for us.

Well, when you discuss dwarves and hobbits, in size being in the same vein. There is much to mine in the way of puns!

I figured we could use a thread for discussing any and ALL fantasy fiction off-topic of J.R.R. Tolkien since several books are often referenced or discussed in passing on the forum, such as Flanagan's Ranger's apprentice series. So I took this thread and changed the title to confuse you all. Muahahahaha.
I, for one, want to give a shout out to the newest addition to my "Favorites List" of book series...I've read the first three books of Glen Cook's Black Company series, and it was, in my opinion, absolutely awesome. Anyone else read "The Black Company", "Shadows Linger", or "The White Rose"? Any books further along in the series? SPILL!
I'm told that it's big with the Military Veteran crowd, as it's written from a less fantastical, more in-the-thick-of-it viewpoint, with the harsher realities and gritty attitudes seen in the field. In that way, it may not appeal to everyone here (I was skeptical going in, but by a few chapters in I was hooked.) It's also probably not one for everyone, since the language can be a bit crude from time to time.
Read all the Black Company books. I own them in omnibus editions and the first 6 as signed copies. I liked them until about the end of the 6th book then it started getting a little odd.
How about the Orcs series by Stan Nichols? A nice look at the bad guys as the good guys.
I also enjoy the 5th Millennium series by S.M. Stirling and Shirley Meyer. It's a little post-apocalyptic fantasy, but a good read nonetheless.
Still round the corner there may wait a new road or a secret gate and though I oft have passed them by a day will come at last when I shall take the hidden paths that run west of the moon, east of the sun.
I'm not familiar with the Black company books, but I'm reading "Exile" by R.A. Salvatore (#2 Drizzt Novel) to give myself a small break from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.
