What's everyone working on?
Re: What's everyone working on?
Hey I really like that idea Carter, and even more so that you are trolling through older posts to find inspiration.
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

Re: What's everyone working on?
Oddly enough, I did not find it looking through the forum. I was google image searching for something like “Middle Earth Ranger Symbol”, saw the pic and was pleasantly surprised to be brought back here.
So, since I’ve been making so much ranger gear with “real” materials, I think my 3D Printer has been feeling neglected. No room for plastics in the wilds of Middle Earth. I’m happy to find a use for it again with 3D printed leather stamps. I’m making up some Tree of Gondor stamps as well.

Re: What's everyone working on?
I’ve been away from the forums for a bit as well, and you’re certainly right about coming back to see so much great stuff here!Eofor wrote: ↑Sun Mar 19, 2023 1:26 am One of the good things about missing a few weeks on the forums is you come back to so many finished projects. It's very inspiring.
Manv.... just stop it already mate, I'm tired of you shaming me with the quality of your work. Every time I see you've made something it's like you're a player in character in Skyrim making a hundred <leather bag> to level your leatherworking and it just gets better and better.
At any rate, thank you SO MUCH, as always, for the very kind words, Eofor! I hope you know how much it means to me - because it really really does! (And apologies for OFTEN neglecting to answer your personal messages, because I tell myself I want to give a thoughtful, detailed response, but then I get distracted and forget!)
And you’ve hit the nail on the head here, I think. I’ve had a ton of work on my plate lately making various goods for sale, so my own projects get rather neglected, but when I DO finally get to something, I’ve usually leveled up quite a bit since last time! Not sure when exactly I decided I officially wanted to make my living as an artisan, but here we are - and it’s both my favorite thing and the bane of my existence. Indeed, as they say, the cobbler’s children have no shoes!
Speaking of shoes…
Turgolanas wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 3:25 pm Finished a fair amount of projects recently - a bedroll, a shield, and upgrades for my boots so far. Now I just have to fix all of the issues with those I discovered on my first outing with them, as well as put my snapsacks back together lol. My next project is likely to be a pack frame.
Your boots look great! What you’ve done here with your boots reminds me a lot of how I did my own! (And actually, my method was exactly what you mention here - attaching tall uppers onto medieval ankle boots). Over time I find I am becoming less and less fond of the crisscrossed straps up the leg for my own uses, because I keep getting weird gapping between the tongue and the main body of the boot in the places the straps don’t immediately cover, but I’ve got a couple ideas about how to fix that. Looks like it’s not really causing that problem for you though, which is great! They seem to be serving you quite well!Turgolanas wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 6:52 pm I think the winning formula for boots for the future will be to get turn-shoes and use scrap leather to make them tall. Gives a very Aragorn boot vibe without being direct copies. Not quite what I did with these, I took a mid calf medieval boot, cut apart a goodwill cowboy boot that matched well enough, and added some pieces for waterproofing.
For my own part, I’m slowly chipping away at the rough edges of my kit, trying to get everything up to as high of a standard of authenticity as possible. One of the things that I have been trying to do lately has been eliminating all modern buckles and rivets from my gear, so before my last outing, I cut off the conspicuous Tandy buckles I had been using for my bedroll setup, which were attached with simple, modern double-cap rivets, and replaced them with these very nice little medieval spectacle buckles I got online from Thorthor's Hammer, which I sewed on by hand with waxed linen thread. I think the whole setup looks MUCH better now! I still have a few small Tandy buckles here and there on my kit, as well as a handful of rivets in inconspicuous places, but at least this is one step closer!
Here’s a pic of the whole kit with the new buckles (sorry for the poor quality of this one - it’s all I’ve gotten so far: And here’s an example of the old buckles:

Great work Manveruon. I always enjoy seeing your work.
Re: What's everyone working on?
Finished some much needed boot maintenance. Removed the fold down flap and repaired some stitching. Next, a good coat of Pecards.

Andy, what are the stats on the bow in your pic? I love it!
Manveruon, I absolutely love your bedroll setup. Any way you’d be willing to post more detailed pics?

Re: What's everyone working on?
Thanks! Yeah, I could probably snap a few at some point - but honestly, it’s a really really simple setup. Basically it’s just about 3 yards (I think) of lightweight oilcloth from periodfabric.com that I sewed some channels into at the end to pass a length of rope through, which allows me to use it as a hammock or small shelter tarp. Then, inside, I’ve got an old gray wool military blanket, and currently, that’s about it! In future though, if I’m actually doing an overnight trek with it, I will likely add another lightweight blanket inside, and wrap up some other basic necessities inside (like a change of socks and underwear, maybe some not-immediately-needed rations, and so forth). I also may add another, slightly larger tarp at some point if and when I can get my hands on more of this oilcloth, because then I could use one as a ground cloth or hammock, and the other as a shelter tarp.
Anyway, the way I’ve got it now, I just lay out the tarp flat, run the ropes parallel along the ends, on the inside, lay the blanket(s) on top, then fold the whole thing lengthwise into roughly thirds. After that, I roll the whole thing up, with the shoulder strap roughly down the middle, and then buckle it all closed with the two smaller straps to secure it. Lastly, the snapsack gets tied onto the shoulder strap, so it hangs roughly across the front of me and under one arm when worn.
Hope that’s at least mostly clear!

Re: What's everyone working on?
(late reply, sorry) that is true, however mine with additional arrow sock the arrows will still fall out if I have it on my back and lean over forward, but mine is a wide quiver intended for LARP arrows so....

Re: What's everyone working on?
I finally finished the leatherwork and stitching on my snapsack! Oh my god, my fingers are sore. This is the most stitching I've ever done on a leather project and the main seam is rolled to make it 4 layers thick!
Thanks to Elleth for the great inspiration and instructions viewtopic.php?t=4967
Not an exact copy, but those instructions were incredibly helpful! Thank you.
The snapsack fits my cook pot (though quite tight, I'm counting on it stretching a bit and softening over time), bags of food, change of socks/underwear, etc. The hard pot goes towards my back and other soft goods will flex around my side and not be too cumbersome under the arm. Now I've just got make some proper toggle cords and to work out a better method than twine to connect it to my quiver chest strap. I'll probably just make some little 6 inch belt straps, but the twine will do for my camping trip next week. Any suggestions are welcome.

Not a suggestion regarding your bag, that is awesome work, but I would reconsider the tankard at the belt.

Re: What's everyone working on?
Been pretty heavy on the leatherwork lately. Working on a new sheath for my bushcraft knife. A bit modern, and not the most "Rangery," but it's a far cry better than the nylon and plastic sheath the knife came with. It's a stout camp knife that I wear kinda hidden around the back, under the cloak. My seax worn visible around the front. The pouch holds a ferro rod & steel, and a sharpening stone. The knife handle also hides a small compartment with needle & thread, fishing line & hooks, and matches so I get double duty for survival gear. I just need to dye and finish it, but I might stamp out a Dunedain Star on it first.
Also, I've been got a dozen SE rangers badges made up. Just need to whip up some wire pins. Any Southeast Rangers will get one attending a meetup or event.
