For the pouch project I previously mentioned (haven't had a chance to finish it since my last post :x ) I used 6-7 oz vegetable tanned leather purchased from Tandy (I like to buy when they have shoulders for $20... call your local shop to get on the mailing list for the sales flyer) dyed with Fiebin...

I originally thought the same... a large iron bound wooden mallet.. but i think the other interpretation is more plausible. Given the fact that they are a mining tool, and knowing what they can do to turf (probably not the intended use 8) ) I can imagine dwarves using them and the damage they could ...

I purchased the above book, and was sadly disappointed in it. The movie photos were great, but the actual information was sub-par in that it was not true to Tolkien in many cases or to actual truths about weapons and armour. In other words, I wouldn't suggest using it as a "historical" enc...
