Last year, I attended a short class about the Fiore's "Flower of Battle" bastoncello section. This might be similar but not palm sized sticks as you're mentioning.

I have found the galvanized roofing nails don't peen as well I would have liked. They tended to bend and become too loose.

You can also search the site for several threads for making boots also. Some were mocs, but I remember Andy's and another Ranger (names escapes me---English, recreates Nottingham hunter persona) made nice servicable period boots

For a cheap shillelagh, find a decent size scrub tree or oak sapling. Dig up the root with a burl or knob. Cut to length and finish.
