Re: On the subject of blankets and shelters
I had a waxed canvas bed roll that i put my blankets in, but it still got damp depending on the weather and if it slid back behind my saddle pad. I cant say that you couldn't keep blankets dry in a tarp tent, but getting there is where i found the problems. I set a tarp tent on a very rainy week lon...

Natural Leather Dye
I have been experimenting with natural leather dying. So far i have tried walnut hulls, coffee, coffee with hibiscus flowers, and store bought leather dye. I really like the colors from the coffee and coffee hibiscus mix... https://i.imgur.com/KiMkdO5m.jpg Samples out in the sun https://i.imgur.com/...

Re: Patterned fabric, Dwarven or not??
Thanks so much :P This is a really simple project, here's the pattern I made it to: https://i.imgur.com/3Rnfgbz.jpg It's just a slightly modified version of the standard viking hood pattern, just try it with some cheap fabric to get the angles right before cutting some nicer wool Thanks, currently ...

Re: Patterned fabric, Dwarven or not??
Looks great! I think the pattern makes it a little more unique to you! Been rereading the hobbit and it seems like each dwarf had a hood that was a color of their choosing... Dr green to scarlet red... Cant wait to get to make a good clothes like this!

Re: Starting to Assemble a Dwarven Toolkit
Iodo on the hone stones you maybe be able to pull a lot of the oil out. I have done this with varying success in the past. The method given to me by my grandfather is: Soak the stone is boiling hot water for a while (15-20 mins) then scrub with hot water and dish soap or old type lye soap. Allow to ...

Re: Dwarven Horse gear
Here is a sketch of my idea on the saddle packs... The Front bags would be able to attach to the back pack and one of the back packs will be able to come off and be used hiking, ect. https://i.imgur.com/MMmkGlM.jpg Canvas bags will be a burnt orange color. the leather will be dark brown and red brow...

Re: Dwarven Horse gear
Here are my ideas for my Saddle... I ride academic style, currently in a traditional English saddle, though a more Baroque saddle would be nice. I have had a really hard time finding a saddle both Rosie and I fit well in. When i did find a saddle somehow i got one with no rings or dees for attaching...

Re: Dwarven Horse gear
Anyhow - I don't know anything about tack specifically, but with medieval/fantasy leatherwork generally I think absolute biggest leap one can make is using period correct hardware. Off-the-shelf Tandy buckles and modern rivets can always seem a bit Ren-Faire-ish - but pop on a hand-cast buckle and ...

Dwarven Horse gear
Been working on new tack for my big horse over the last few year, and never really had a goal look in mind, except to be unique to Rosie. Well I have always loved the worlds we travel in books and Tolkien has always been a favorite. I didn't have this dwarven idea in mind specifically when i was mak...

Re: On the subject of blankets and shelters
Alpaca wool is warmer than sheep wool by a lot, However, It does not retain heat if it gets wet! I think if i remember right alpaca is about 75% warmer than sheep wool, and it is a lot softer than most other wool. I used a canvas bedroll cover when i started doing mounted distance rides. it did help...
