Hithlain
I was wondering if anyone out there has given any thought to Hithlain, or Elven rope. It is described as tough, light, soft-feeling and grey. Even though it's not "historically accurate", I was wondering if we might be able to get away with nylon or polyester. Anyway, was wondering if anyo...

Re: Color variations in "uniform" clothing
True Tom. Your comment made me go back and research further. The Complete Guide to Middle Earth mentions a "uniform" for the Rangers of Ithilien but in The Two Towers, it actually says they were "clad in green and brown of varied hues, as if the better to walk unseen in the glades of ...

Re: Fine-tuning travelling kit
Wonderful idea - I like it! Very adaptive and readily available in Tolkiens's world. I'm reminded of all the reeds in Tom Bombadil's neck of the woods.

Very good looking impression. I like the simplicity of it. And kudos on the spear. I wouldn't have known!

Color variations in "uniform" clothing
One interesting thing that I've gleaned from my research and the many blogs I've read is despite the Rangers of Ithilien's military association, they were not particularly "uniform". Yes, we see in the movie where the White Tree symbol is used, earlier artwork by the Hildebrandts doesn't s...

Re: Rangers of the North, and South
"Still she did not blench: Maiden of the Rohirrim, child of kings, slender but as a steel blade, fair yet terrible. A swift stroke she dealt, skilled and deadly. The outstretched neck she clove asunder, and the hewn head fell like a stone. Backward she sprang as the huge shape crashed to ruin, ...

Re: Rangers of the North, and South
To continue. It's interesting that Tolkien began another story but did not finish it concerning Bergil, Beregond's son. Bergil would go on to function as a commander of the Rangers of Ithilien in further securing Minas Morgul (Ithil) from the lingering servants of the Enemy. He proposed that a new c...

Re: Rangers of the North, and South
Thanks Mirimaran. As always, your wisdom shows through. I am glad that this forum can support a number of different Ranger persona views. Within Tolkien's world, Rangers of the North were always held with a sense of awe and mystery. I believe even the Rangers of Ithilien held them to be so. In many ...

Re: Military structure of Rangers of the Reunited Kingdom
Thanks Rifter. You make many valid points. Rangers in general are a very independent lot. I wasn't suggesting this for forum - wide users but only for those doing Rangers of Gondor. We are attempting to recreate Rangers of the Reunited Kingdom in the Fourth Age of Middle Earth. Rangers of Gondor wer...

Re: Military structure of Rangers of the Reunited Kingdom
That was one thing I considered Ringulf. Good idea. I will refer you to Tomcat 1066 on this as I've reassigned myself to the Quartermaster Corps and he is now the Captain. I'll let him know about your post and maybe you two can talk it over.

Re: Military structure of Rangers of the Reunited Kingdom
I've always like their artwork too Ringulf. Our Ranger group is really coming together. We've done a lot of administrative work these last couple of days. Tomcat 1066 has been elected our Captain and we're fleshing out positions from medic to communication to forward scouts. Tried to do some researc...

Re: Military structure of Rangers of the Reunited Kingdom
Do you guys have any thoughts on the number of Rangers operating in a typical unit? I know in modern special forces groups, small tactical units can range from 4 -8 or so. Also in the modern context, it's not unusual to have operators with higher ranks, as they usually had a rank before being select...

Re: Military structure of Rangers of the Reunited Kingdom
I agree with your concerns Elleth. I was just following the example of many of the re-enactment groups that I've belonged to (Mainly 18th century and Civil War) where rank was assigned. In those genres, we mainly followed the protocol out of wanting to be as authentic as we could as well as having s...
