Re: First-time trekkers' list

I find that things get much simplier when you break things down to the basics: BED: what do I need to sleep? KITCHEN: what do I need to cook & eat? BATHROOM: What do I need to <bleep>? WEAPONS: what do I need to defend myself? TOOLS: what do I need to repair my gear or do basic work? ex: Bathroo...

Re: Quick update and question

As I recall, the Rus were the Swedish "vikings" who settled in Russia. The Danes went south, the Norse west and the Swedes east.
Later the Rus became the Verangian Guard.

As I recall, "A Rus!" was their battle cry.

Re: Some musings on longswords and rangering.

I've always carried a heavy broadsword, http://rick-johnsons-writings.wens.com/mer41.jpg this modified Oscar kablomovich blade being my favorite. I had the tank lengthened, the decorative garbage removed from the guard, then I rebuilt the handle added rayskin and made a pommel I liked (the original ...

Re: Archery Instructor-Master Fletcher-Boyer-Ask Me Anything

I'v read the reports of the skeletal deformities for professional athletes who started young from female gymnists to martial artists to medieval archers and those reports scare me. My daughter was an athlete and insisted on training and before she left high school, she had blown her kneecap and lost...

Re: Strider's Bow

I just finished a paper on Martian Archery for the Burroughs site and that got me thinking about the ME bows. Were they Self-Bows or Composite? If Composite, with what were they backed? I'm guessing between 40-80# draw depending on if he felt that he needed to stop a rabbit for a stew or a deer to f...

Re: Strider's Bow

Anyone consider writing a letter to WETA or whomever holds the gear & costumes for the movie and ask them for specs, drawings, photos? I realize that Legolas used a CGI string and arrows but the bow existed, if only as a prop so the same would be true for Aragorn. A real bow or bow-like prop tha...

Re: Cold Steel MAA Italian Longsword!!

I bought the polished version at the first Combat-Con and love the blade. Cold Steel makes two versions , one longer and one broader of blade. Both are a wonder to hold. I also bought the Hanswei hand-and-half (unsharpened) as a tournament blade and the CS poly hand-and-half for practice. Yes, when ...

Re: New Flint and Steel

When I was stationed in England, I filled my duffle with flint and let the load crew drag it on board the aircraft. Then I took a large piece to the Renaissance Fair and traded it to the blacksmith for a striker kit. THEN i made him demonstrate it a few times while I asked questions and practiced wi...

Re: Traditional bowstring

In a larger city like Tucson, we have the 'hippie' section where the head shops and poster stores and steampunk places and food co-op stores congregate. There is always a clothing store that sells hemp clothing and you can easily get hemp string there.

last chance is Amazon<g> dot com.
