Re: Independence Day
Take the time to remember those men and women who are still in harm's way today to protect what we hold dear and are celebrating today.

Re: Some more questions...
Actually, brigandine and coats of plates can be made fairly easy. The more elaborate will require a lot more rivets, but it can be done.

Re: Some more questions...
Brigandine was worn over maille in order to provide some rigid protection of key areas prior to plate becoming common. Maille provides limited protection to blunt force trauma, even over a gambeson. I would think that a ranger who is going to fight in a major battle that he is aware of beforehand wo...

Re: Rangers and the SCA
It has been my experience that only a limited number of SCAdians are completely dedicated to authenticity (thought these few can be a bit of a pain). A lot of us are there for the fun and to learn a few things along the way. As long as you don't introduce yourself as a Dunedain or ranger, you should...

Re: Rangers and the SCA
I suppose I could take up the yeoman archer/woodsman/huntsman persona, but I rather enjoy my Saxon persona (pretty much the same as Beornmann). I move a lot due to the Army so I am a but of a wandering warrior and my ranger/woodsman skills are justified by the constant moving. Erich MacKermak known ...

I have all those Simplicity patterns and have used several. The Butterick pattern for pouches/bracers and boots will be added to the collection soon (thanks to you guys bringing it to my attention).

Re: What's an untrained ranger to do?
Have you looked at Schola Saint George (tied to Chivalry Bookshelf since both are run by the same guy)? They have several study groups and train in Italian longsword, spear, dagger, and grappling. Not sure where the nearest group would be for some of you, but I know of study groups in Charleston, SC...

Where did you get that axe in the first place? I like the shape and it is definitely what I would like to add to my equipment.

True, they are a bit more about practice, though Brian Price goes a bit into Fiore's philosophy as well.

Re: Philosophy of WMA masters?
Several books more oriented to WMA are "The Sword in Two Hands" by Brian Price and "Secrets of the German Longsword" by Christian Tobler. Brian's book is based on Fiorre's Italian school of combat, and Christian's is based on Lichtenaur/Ringeck German style. Both are pretty good ...

Re: Inexpensive Sparring Armor
I am an SCA heavy fighter among other things. Some ideas I have seen: -The weight belt you have might do ok for shinai, for bokken you might want to add some splints, plastic from a 55 gal drum works fine. You can usually get drums from the local car wash for free. Make sure the belt covers the kidn...
