Re: 2013-14 Hawking Season
I've always thought that I had some of the coolest hobbies ever...building, making, using and hunting with gear that I made with mine own hand.
You sir have the best hobby ever though...such a gorgeous animal doing what it was meant to do...
Such a beautiful symbiotic relationship!

Re: Beef Jerky, how do you do it?
I cut mine about 1/4" thick. Marinade over night in a bag containing liquid smoke. I then season....I just use fine kosher or sea salt and a bit of black pepper, coat to taste. I like it a bit salty and peppery, as it seasons stews well without having to carry any thing else. I then slap it in ...

Oh no way! Tang SHOULD be soft! I know exactly what you mean about the ricasso area being springy!
I learned to HT using Tim Lively's method (which is exactly like what you are talking about)....but, I have to re-line my forge and there is no way for me to do it right now....let me know!

Re: fire steels
There was a gent name Mike Ameling that made some of the BEST period firesteels I have ever used. Unfortunately he passed away back on '08. I have one of his Roman sled style steels. These steels are found all over Britain and were thought to have been traded extensively with the native Britons. I c...

If you use a 10x10 tarp....it will be about 5' high at the front....easy to sit under, in a chair....nice and dry....of course, this will work with pretty much any size tarp!
