Ah, hell. Sorry to hear that, Eric. I hope they catch the scum, and I hope you get your stuff back. Best wishes, friend.

My personal favorite in that vein is George Silver's Paradoxes of Defense. But there are many good ones.

Re: Inexpensive Sparring Armor
LOL Okay, I'll bite. It's pretty much always on my mind...um, that and Willie Nelson... I view training as a spectrum. Different kinds of training for different aspects, and different safety requirements. For instance, a lot of work with hickory wasters with no safety gear, but at a speed slow enoug...

Re: What's an untrained ranger to do?
You know, at Harnas's Recreational Violence weekend last July, we had a couple of good classes in hawk & dagger. Heh, that was actually a pretty axe intensive weekend. One thing that hit me early on...er, other than the guys that were trying to...is that it can be very similar to espada y daga w...

Re: What's an untrained ranger to do?
Wow. R D, you've said it beautifully. I bow to your eloquence! Yes, HEMA has become ridiculously political and dogmatic. And yes, there are idiots with the sword who are dangerous to be near, espcially the "backyard berserker". Echoing the words of others here, I'll say that a grounding in...

Re: Whats your program for ranger fitness?
I run two or three times/week. The alternate days, I do martial arts, usually a mix of eastern and western. Frequently, this comes to sparring for two hours. Longsword is a great arm and shoulder workout, especially when winding. Sword and dagger or sword and buckler is fantastic cardio. Wrestling a...
Re: I.33
Whoops, sorry it took me so long to get back to this. But I've been hit in the head a lot, and my mind wanders... The plastic wasters are a simulation, and so won't be perfect. I've only briefly played with the plastic swords, but they do seem to be a bit closer to steel than the wooden waste...

Re: Chinese Swordsmanship
Not really able to add much new to what's already been said. Yes, any sword (or other weapon) system developed in a particular environment, with regard to the local culture, technology, armor, terrain, etc. And, as has already been said, and very well, there are only so many ways for the human body ...
Re: I.33
I.33 is a blast. I do find that using the buckler primarily to protect the hand, and secondarily in an offensive role works well. I've also noticed a lot of similarities in motion to some Filipino double stick work. (Clever, those medieval Europeans sneaking over to the Phillipines to steal techniqu...

Re: Carolina Renaissance Festival
Yeah, that would be the Pittsburgh Ren Fest. It's not bad. I've been, a few times. Actually, I performed in it the first year, a stage combat routine. http://www.pgh-renfest.com/ It's not bad, a good selection of vendors, and somewhat entertaining. If I never see another mud show, it will be too soon.

Re: What's your preffered method of fighting for Rangers?
Hey, the site looks good. But it could stand some information on directions, where to stay, what to bring, things like that. I did get a chance to go through Highland Knife Fighting. Extremely interesting, especially how the grappling is seen as so integral to the knife. The more I play with it, the...

Re: Speed Shooting, Weapon Drawing, and Transitioning
I'm not that familiar with these bows, but I think Kassai is good. Some eastern European and horse bows here. I know some people who do Mongol shooting and they like his bows. http://www.eastern-archery.com/ I remember shooting one, and was impressed with the easy draw. But I'll confess, I'm a longb...
